In 2021, Sorrentino was Professor of Medicine and Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Center at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and had held a Faculty position at the University of Udine Medical School in Italy. Dario Rosario Sorrentino was born on July 25, 1957 in Alghero, Sassari, Italy, son of Antonio and Rosa (née Messina) Sorrentino.
He graduated from high school at Liceo Scientifico, Alghero in 1976. He earned his Medical Degree at University of Sassari in Italy in 1982. During his training he spent time as a research fellow at the GI/Liver Unit of the University of California, San Francisco. He specialized in Gastroenterology in 1987 in Italy.
